Two Samples of the Afternoon Show
Here are the first 18 minutes of today's edition of the Afternoon Show. This is the show that the Kieschnick Administration replaced Issues Etc. with.
BONUS TRACK!!! - Don't Miss This second segment!! This is LCMS Radio Ministry at its "Finest"!
What do you think?
Does this provide any answers about the mysterious "Programmatic Reasons" for canceling Issues Etc?
What is this? Is this mean to tranquilize my soul? I am completely weirded out. Lacking substance.
I feel like they were just using "Chronicles of Narnia" as a commerical appeal to new listeners. Cute.
Listeners also don't like to be talked down to.

There's something off about it.
Posted by: FreeSpeechLutheran | April 04, 2008 at 01:51 PM
They don't do "smooth talk" well.
Posted by: FreeSpeechLutheran | April 04, 2008 at 01:54 PM
As a side note, I'm sure the hosts are probably fine Christians, but my honest view is this just weirds me out.

No sir, I don't like it.

UNBELIEVABLE!!

This was soooooooo boring. I couldn't even stay focused.
They killed Issues Etc for this!!!
Is this Kieschnick's vision for the future of the LCMS? He's not modernizing the church he's giving it a sex change! This isn't my grandfather's church alright. This is Oprah's church.

My email to KFUO:
I think that the hosts of the Afternoon Show are trying very hard in a difficult situation. It is not the show that I will tune in to listen or to download. I hope that KFUO can find a better alternative to Issues Etc. or return Issues to the air.
Prayerfully,

Wow...talking about men who walk along the beach with teeny tiny weights...
impressive...

Thanks for sharing.
Reminds me of the Saturday Night Live public radio bit from a few years back. Minus the bran muffin endorsements.
I like that he didn't want to 'wax too Lutheran,' and he certainly didn't with that favorite Luther quote.

A lot of talk and no substance. Issues, Etc was 100% better. So sad to see what is going on with Synod. Who would want to give mission money to something like that. I will give KFUO 0 dollars.

Do you think this was a slapped together show? If this is what was planned, another vote of no confidence is in order. It has the feeling of a knee jerk reaction to try to kill the controversy. It is way too safe and timid to mean much. All potatoes, no meat.

Yawn.
Any news on whether the Archives are actually functional again yet? Or are they going to hope that goes away too?

Due to popular demand, someone has made shirts.

This not only spiritually vacuous, but stupid! This is Christian programming the David Strand hopes we'll enjoy? What planet does he commute from?

I haven't listened to the second track yet, but something needs to be made clear here...
What about this portion of the broadcast is Christian (let alone Lutheran)? Listen carefully and tell me what makes this conversation uniquely Christian. This portion of the broadcast could just as easily been one between Mormons or Buddhists or even atheists.
In Mr. Strand's most recent letter, he says:
I invite you also to listen to “The Afternoon Show” on KFUO-AM,
weekdays from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Now and into the future, it will
be the constant endeavor of KFUO-AM management to offer the best
in Gospel-based programming throughout the day—programming that
reaches out to Lutherans, other Christians, and the unchurched,
and all within a budget we can hope to sustain.
This, and Mr. Strand's previous letter, imply to me that they've replaced one Christian ministry with another. But lacking anything uniquely Christian in this segment, let alone any part of the conversation that focuses on Christ and His death and resurrection FOR ME, I consider Mr. Strand's implication to be a lie and highlights this whole situation as the travesty it is.
The Gospel has been thrown out for something that not only doesn't even qualify as Christian, but that isn't even MEDIOCRE-quality talk radio. Are they TRYING to drive people away from the church?
If I wasn't infuriated before, this is a good way to do it. If the management of KFUO isn't even able to discern what basic Christian talk radio consists of in its content, they're in far worse shape than much of the information on this site has already shown. Wow.

You have got to be kidding me. This is like a SNL sketch with Tina Fey and Amy Pohler. "Good times." Only this is not a comedy parody - this is real.
This is going to get better ratings than Issues, Etc.? I can't wait for the synodical spin cycle to kick in.
This is simply terrible. Absolute rubbish.

WHERE'S THE GOSPEL? 18 minutes of mindless drivel and Jesus wasn't mentioned once! This is horrible programming at best.

Do I think this was a slapped together show? Yes I do
Do I think this is a travesty? Of course!
But, how clever it must seem to the David Strands of the world to have put a Women announcer on the show that sets "thinking women" back about 100 years with this fluf. And I am sorry but her voice drove me nuts in the first five minutes of listening - I couldn't take it.
Does it divert any of us from the real issue of why Issues was cancelled? I pray NOT!

Folks, I'm as upset with the cancellation of "Issues, Etc." as anybody. But this is a rather disturbing post and thread of comments. Would you speak this way about these radio hosts if they were face to face with you? Would you criticize a woman's voice, over which she has no control? Would you call them vacuous, stupid, and say they produced rubbish? How have these people sinned against you, that you should treat them this way? Even if they had, do you get to stop loving your enemies and treating them with respect? You owe your Christian brothers and sisters (and everyone, for that matter) the same love and respect in their absence as you do in their presence. You do no service to Todd and Jeff to advocate for them in this way.

I respect the two show hosts, however, the type of message revealed in the second clip sounds like a "by our own works we are saved" type of message. Where is Christ at the center? Exercising is good, but it is through Christ only, not by our own works, we find peace and sustenance.

Thanks for these segments. Since I can only listen online, I really appreciate it. I tried to listen to an Issues, Etc. archive earlier today, but --- nothing came of it. Then I thought I'd listen to this new show, but it wasn't available. I continue to mourn the loss of the only radio show I ever looked forward to listening to or would listen to repeatedly.

O.K., I listened to 11 minutes, which was all I could stand. It really was like listening in to a conversation at the office: respectful, friendly, and totally boring, because I don't know these people. Sad that this is what KFUO thinks is mission outreach!
Another thing, and I'm trying to tread lightly here, but I tire of the German identity thing within the LCMS. I'm not sure how long Diane and her co-host went on - I turned it off. Yes, it is inseparable from the synod's history, and deserves it's right place. But in my opinion, we might entice more people to join us if we highlighted our commonality, our focus on Christ, Christ for us, for the world, everything Todd Wilken did through Issues, Etc. It is a crying shame what has happened.
